Are you a consumer?
Sunday, March 9th, 2008 at 6:57 pmAre you a typical American consumer?
As much as I hate to admit it to myself, I am. It is true that I do not live in an oversized home (it’s only barely over 1,000 square feet) or drive a vehicle that takes up most of the road (I have a very practical and fairly fuel efficient sedan). My TV is at least 6 years old (definitely not cutting edge technology), I do not subscribe to cable and my cell phone does not function as a portable office. Just the same, I fall into the trap of unnecessary consumption all the time. One has only to look in my closet for confirmation of that. Or then again my library or my jewelry making supplies.
So what makes Americans so purchase happy? How did shopping become therapy? Why do we worship at the alter of the almighty dollar? I think the answer might surprise you.
For an interesting and very thought provoking look at the reasons for American consumerism, please watch this 20 minute video. Trust me when I say that it is worth your time.
I’d be interested in knowing your thoughts on this, so please feel free to comment.
