Energy Dispersion
Friday, April 25th, 2008 at 9:52 pmOf the things with which I find myself challenged, dispersion of my energy is probably the most costly. Anybody who knows me will tell you that I have a lot of irons in the fire all the time. While on the one hand, this is something that I find very exciting because my mind is constantly being challenged, it also tends to result in my not using my time as effectively as I’d like.
On any given day, I tend to the details of a dozen or more projects. Much of the time, I am doing several things at once. I am the queen of multitasking. I can listen to a teleseminar on a webcast while answering emails, all the while keeping one eye on the meal that I’m cooking and another on the notes for the next class that I am preparing to teach. I would be lost without my agenda which at least gives me some time frames for where I need to be and when. Although I would like to be able to lay out the scope and sequence of some of the bigger projects that interest me, I tend to get bogged down in the minutia of what needs to be taken care of today. Of course, this might not be a problem if I didn’t have so many things going all at once, but because I’m doing so many new and exciting ventures that are pushing me to the next level, I wouldn’t know what to give up.
The problem with all of this is that most of the time I feel like I’m turning in circles. There is too much data in my head to be able to see all the parts without losing sight of the whole. In fact, a great deal of my time is spent trying to decide which of the projects/tasks/errands should take priority. Because I often don’t know how to answer that question, I end up doing a little bit of work on several different projects. While I can say that I follow through on my commitments, the process that I use to complete the tasks is definitely not streamlined and therefore not time efficient.
So even though I’m not really sure how to start, this is one of the areas that I would like to work on. I would like to find ways to use my time and energy more wisely and focus my actions so that more work gets done in less time and with less effort and confusion. Wow! I wonder what that’s like? I hope to find out some day.
