Life Detours

Any astute reader can see that it’s been awhile since I’ve written a blog post.  As tempting as it is to try and justify this and make excuses, that would not be a path of growth and expansion for me, so I will not go there.  The truth of the matter is that I have allowed a number of other things in my life get in the way of my purpose and vision.  For months now I have been on a detour.  Today I am choosing to get back on track.

The details of my detour might be interesting, but honestly they are irrelevant.  We all experience times in our lives when we lose sight of our vision and goals.  Sometimes we go through periods of loss, grief, disappointment, anger or hostility towards ourselves and others which temporarily stop us from seeing how to move forward in the creation process.  We do not advance because we have lost sight of our destination.  At other times, we are so distracted by all the fun that we are having that we do not take the time to do the work that it takes to forge ahead.  Not only do we not see our destination, but we aren’t even looking for it. And sometimes we know exactly where we want to go, but the feeling of not knowing which step to take keeps us immobilized in our fear and doubt, which also means that we seem to be going nowhere.

Regardless of the reasons for stalling or stepping off the path, sooner or later we must advance.  So how do we do that?

Here are just a few suggestions:

  • Meditate.  Find time to quiet your mind.  This will allow you to calm the monkey mind that often distracts us from our focus and purpose.   Let clarity and inspiration flow through you.
  • Take care of yourself. Get lots of rest; drink enough water; eat a healthy diet.  Taking care of the body helps to focus the mind and soothe the emotions so that you can effectively direct your energy and manifest that which you desire.
  • Set daily intentions. At the beginning of each day, determine what you intend to focus on for that day and repeat it to yourself as needed when you find yourself not knowing how to proceed.
  • Honor your feelings, but act on your commitments. You may be dealing with very difficult emotions.  Take time to process them, but remember the commitments that you’ve made both to yourself and to others.  Honoring your obligations will not only give you a sense of honor and integrity, it will also help you to process your feelings more quickly.
  • Do one thing a day (no matter how little) that moves you towards your vision. This could be making a phone call, setting up a meeting, organizing your thoughts, doing some research or brainstorming with someone else.  The size of the step doesn’t matter.  What matters is the movement and the intention behind it.
  • Write daily acknowledgments. It is vitally important that you give yourself credit for the things you do.  Remember that even little steps are getting you closer to the outcome that you desire, so acknowledge them with as much enthusiasm as you do the giant leaps forward.
  • Find an accountability partner. Ask a friend, a family member, a co-worker or a coach to check in with you on the progress you are making towards your goals. How could a coach help you to move confidently in the direction of your dreams?

Sometimes in life we find ourselves off course.  Practice non-judgment of yourself for that, and when you’re ready, find a way to focus your energy so that you can begin to put one foot in front of the other and move from your detour back onto your chosen path.
