One of the things I stress with my clients and in my classes is the importance of finding support when you are taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone. Whatever the step is that you are trying to make, it always feels better if you know that somebody has your back and is willing to cheer you on.
This is actually one of my areas of weakness and one that I am working on changing. In the past I have felt like I didn’t want to burden others with my often ugly and somewhat messy growth process. I told myself that they didn’t have time in their busy lives or that they wouldn’t be interested. Of course, this is a very limiting belief, both for myself and for the people I choose to have in my life. Not only does this kind of thinking not allow me to get the support that I desperately want and need, it also doesn’t allow my friends to love me in all the ways that they might be willing and able to do so. I attended a meeting today that I was really not looking forward to. Not only was I not happy about the reason for the meeting, I was also a little put out by the fact that I had to go across town to attend it. Needless to say, I wasn’t expecting it to be a very pleasant experience.
And then something beautiful happened. I reconnected with people that I haven’t seen in years making all the rest of it irrelevent. The school where the meeting took place was one where I taught a number of years ago. In fact, I was one of the founding staff members the year that this school opened. So today I found myself sitting around the table with former colleagues with whom I have shared wonderful times in the past and was surprised at how happy I was to be among them. The smiles, hugs and inquiries about my life brought back fond memories of the bonds that we had created so many years ago, which have been put aside because of time and geography, but definitely not forgotten.
