When President George W. Bush was voted into office for a second term four years ago, how many of us lost hope that things in this country might ever change? I know that I did. By nature, I am optimistic and hopeful, but watching the direction our country has taken these past eight years has made me wary and worried. I never thought I’d see history in the making the way I saw it today.
At 8:01 this evening, I cried. At that moment, I felt the winds of change shift in a direction that once again makes me feel hopeful for our country. The election of a Barack Obama to the highest political office in our nation is an historic moment and one that makes me proud to be a citizen of this great country.
I am awed by the fact that I am a witness to history in the making. I am hopeful for my own future, as well as the future of this nation. Most importantly, I am hopeful for my son’s future. I am filled with optimism for the generations of young people today who are witnessing the truth of the ideas that change can happen and that anything is possible.
We still have a long road ahead of us, but for the first time in years I have reason to feel happy about the direction the road is taking.

I went to yoga class the other day, but instead of becoming more flexible and fluid in my body, I have become more stiff and rigid. I’m not sure what I did, but somehow during one of the twisting postures, I tweaked my back. At the time, I felt a slight twinge, but I figured that I would be able to stretch it out. I was wrong. The next day, I discovered that there were very few movements that I wanted to make that didn’t cause me some sort of discomfort. I’ve been walking hunched over with my hand rubbing my back like an old lady for the past two days.
This has been an interesting experience for me. I have never had back problems before, and I must admit that I have not had a lot of patience with it. I want to be able to get where I’m going and do what I have to do without thinking about whether or not a given movement is going to be painful. This is slowing me down, and that is very frustrating.
So, in my best coaching voice, I ask myself, “Where’s the gift? What does this have to teach me?”
Here are a couple of things I’ve come up with:
The body is incredible! It is a finely tuned organism with an almost unfathomable coordination of parts. If you hurt any part of it, you will feel the effect in other places. Although different parts of the body have different functions, no part works completely alone. There is a connectedness.
Hmmm!! I wonder, is there a metaphor here?
There is a beauty in slowing down. I’ve found that as my body has slowed down, so have my thoughts. Without trying to, I’ve managed to slow down my racing monkey mind to match the pace of my slower gate. How refreshing!
And as I slow down, I start to understand how very ineffectual it is to race through my day. Not only is it not always very productive to be constantly in motion, it also results in me missing a great deal of beauty and wonder along the way. This morning I stopped to smell the fall air, look at the fall colors and listen to the sounds of the leaves moving in the breeze. I’ve been listening better, seeing the little details of things all around me and feeling the joy so many little pleasures in life.
I wouldn’t wish back pain on anyone. It truly is no fun. I would, however, wish for everyone the beauty of understanding how taking a slower pace can enrich and enhance your life. What a gift!

Any astute reader can see that it’s been awhile since I’ve written a blog post. As tempting as it is to try and justify this and make excuses, that would not be a path of growth and expansion for me, so I will not go there. The truth of the matter is that I have allowed a number of other things in my life get in the way of my purpose and vision. For months now I have been on a detour. Today I am choosing to get back on track.
The details of my detour might be interesting, but honestly they are irrelevant. We all experience times in our lives when we lose sight of our vision and goals. Sometimes we go through periods of loss, grief, disappointment, anger or hostility towards ourselves and others which temporarily stop us from seeing how to move forward in the creation process. We do not advance because we have lost sight of our destination. At other times, we are so distracted by all the fun that we are having that we do not take the time to do the work that it takes to forge ahead. Not only do we not see our destination, but we aren’t even looking for it. And sometimes we know exactly where we want to go, but the feeling of not knowing which step to take keeps us immobilized in our fear and doubt, which also means that we seem to be going nowhere.
Regardless of the reasons for stalling or stepping off the path, sooner or later we must advance. So how do we do that?
Here are just a few suggestions:
- Meditate. Find time to quiet your mind. This will allow you to calm the monkey mind that often distracts us from our focus and purpose. Let clarity and inspiration flow through you.
- Take care of yourself. Get lots of rest; drink enough water; eat a healthy diet. Taking care of the body helps to focus the mind and soothe the emotions so that you can effectively direct your energy and manifest that which you desire.
- Set daily intentions. At the beginning of each day, determine what you intend to focus on for that day and repeat it to yourself as needed when you find yourself not knowing how to proceed.
- Honor your feelings, but act on your commitments. You may be dealing with very difficult emotions. Take time to process them, but remember the commitments that you’ve made both to yourself and to others. Honoring your obligations will not only give you a sense of honor and integrity, it will also help you to process your feelings more quickly.
- Do one thing a day (no matter how little) that moves you towards your vision. This could be making a phone call, setting up a meeting, organizing your thoughts, doing some research or brainstorming with someone else. The size of the step doesn’t matter. What matters is the movement and the intention behind it.
- Write daily acknowledgments. It is vitally important that you give yourself credit for the things you do. Remember that even little steps are getting you closer to the outcome that you desire, so acknowledge them with as much enthusiasm as you do the giant leaps forward.
- Find an accountability partner. Ask a friend, a family member, a co-worker or a coach to check in with you on the progress you are making towards your goals. How could a coach help you to move confidently in the direction of your dreams?
Sometimes in life we find ourselves off course. Practice non-judgment of yourself for that, and when you’re ready, find a way to focus your energy so that you can begin to put one foot in front of the other and move from your detour back onto your chosen path.
